Congratulations to Jaden Zwick, 24, the recipient of our firm’s Law School Scholarship. Jaden is a first-year law student at the UCLA David J. Epstein Program in Public Interest Law and Policy in Los Angeles.
The $2,500 scholarship is open to students of need who have great academic potential and a dedication to mentorship. Jaden fits all three descriptions.
Jaden grew up in Federal Way, WA, raised by a single mother in a low-income household that depended upon public assistance. She and her brother are biracial and by the fifth grade, her brother was unfairly categorized as a “delinquent” by their school. By high school, she wrote, her brother had spent more time incarcerated than at school. (Happy to report, her brother is now in college working toward a bachelor’s degree.)
Jaden, on the other hand, was recognized as a high achiever with great potential and was mentored at every step of her education through college at Gonzaga University (Class of 2018).
Her essay, “Mentorship for Solidarity,” pays tribute to those who mentored her to success. Jaden was so positively impacted by this support that she is determined to mentor as many people like herself as possible throughout her career.
“When nurtured by the wisdom of those who came before, we grow beyond the limits of our own individual imagination and gain vibrant sources of hope, motivation, and accountability,” she wrote.
Jaden received full-scholarship and tremendous counseling and support from the Degrees of Change’s Act Six program in Tacoma, WA, which helps around 30 students a year attend partner colleges. She liked the program so much that she became an Act Six Program Coordinator after graduation.
Jaden Provides Leadership and Support to Current Students
“Being an alumna of the Act Six leadership and scholarship initiative, it has been an honor to come full circle in my educational journey by now providing leadership training and support to current students,” she wrote.
She has also served on the Human Rights Commission for the City of Seattle’s Office of Civil Rights.

Along the way, she was awarded the King County Bar Association LSAT Preparation Grant which pays for an LSAT prep course, the LSAT exam fee, and admission fee to law schools, all of which can run in the thousands of dollars. And she met Doug Smith of Equal Justice Works in Los Angeles who urged her to check out the UCLA program.
Jaden Feels Honored to Be Recognized by Ben Crump Law
This scholarship means a lot to Jaden, especially because it was awarded by Ben Crump’s team. Ben is a social justice warrior whom she greatly admires.
“To be recognized by someone like Ben Crump and his law firm, especially in a time like now, it’s so huge for me, it’s so encouraging,’’ she said. “There are people who have gone before me who are looking back at me, saying, yes, you are on the right track.”
