ATLANTA, Ga. –– Social justice and civil rights attorney Ben Crump has been retained to join attorney Michael Harper in representing the Lashawn Thompson family, a man who died after three months in Fulton County Jail. The cause of his death is undetermined but his cell was found in deplorable conditions and he had insect bites in his ears, mouth, nose, and all over his body.
Lashawn was housed in the psychiatric wing of the jail due to his diagnosed mental health issues. Fulton County Jail and Fulton County Sheriff Patrick Labat has suggested there was no foul play that caused Lashawn’s death.
Attorney Crump released the following statement:
“It is completely unacceptable to force inmates to live in appalling conditions where they are subjected to insects, grime, and infections. No one should be treated that way. Lashawn and his family deserve full justice for this inhumane treatment. Inmates deserve humanity and for jail officials to follow mental health protocols nationwide. We are launching an immediate investigation into Lashawn’s death – Lawshawn, his family, and the other inmates of the Fulton County Jail deserve answers now.”
