RICHMOND, Va. –– Nationally renowned civil rights and personal injury attorney Ben Crump, co-counsel Mark Krudys, and the family of Irvo Otieno will hold a Monday news conference following the announcement from Dinwiddie Commonwealth Attorney Amanda Mann’s decision to “nolle pros,” or to dismiss for now, the cases against five of the eight criminal defendants charged with Irvo Otieno’s murder.
On March 6, 2023, Irvo Otieno was killed during the intake process as he was transferred from a Henrico County jail to a state mental health facility by the Henrico County Sheriff’s Department. According to prosecutors, Otieno was in handcuffs and leg irons and was held on the ground for 12 minutes by seven deputies and three hospital workers, smothering him to death. Seven Henrico County Sheriff’s deputies and three hospital employees have been arrested and charged with second-degree murder.
The news conference will be held in the Tilghman Room located on the lobby level.
