OCALA, Fla. –– Nationally renowned civil rights and personal injury attorney Ben Crump released a statement following a jury returning a guilty verdict for Susan Lorincz, shooter of AJ Owens. Lorincz was found guilty of first-degree felony manslaughter with a firearm. Lorincz faces up to 30 years in prison.
On Friday, June 2, 2023, Owens’ children were playing in a field next to an Ocala apartment complex when Lorincz reportedly began yelling at them to get off her land and calling them racial slurs. The children left but accidentally left behind an iPad, which the woman took. After AJ’s children informed AJ of what happened, she walked across the street with her kids to speak with Lorincz. She knocked on the door, and at that point, Lorincz shot through the door, hitting AJ, who later died from her injuries.
Attorney Crump released the following statement:
“We are profoundly grateful that the jury has delivered a guilty verdict in this heartbreaking case. AJ Owens was a devoted mother whose life was tragically cut short, leaving her children, including a young son who witnessed this horrific act, to carry the burden of her loss. This verdict is a critical step in securing justice for AJ and her family. While nothing can erase the pain they’ve endured, today’s decision sends a clear message that senseless violence will be met with accountability. We will continue to stand by AJ’s family as they heal and fight for a future where no family has to experience such devastating loss.”
