STOCKBRIDGE, Ga. – Nationally renowned civil rights and personal injury attorney Ben Crump has been retained by the family of 28-year-old Amber Nicole Thurman, a Black mother who tragically died on August 19, 2022, after being denied timely medical care due to Georgia’s restrictive abortion laws. Thurman had sought a medication-induced abortion in North Carolina after learning she was pregnant with twins following the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade.
After experiencing complications, Thurman was rushed to Piedmont Henry Hospital, in Georgia, where doctors discovered she had not expelled all fetal tissue, leading to a life-threatening infection. Though she urgently needed a dilation and curettage (D&C) procedure, Georgia’s abortion ban, which criminalized the procedure with few exceptions, caused a more than 17-hour delay in her treatment. By the time doctors acted, it was too late, and Thurman tragically died during emergency surgery. A state maternal mortality review committee later deemed her death preventable.
Attorney Crump issued the following statement:
“Amber Thurman’s preventable death is a horrifying consequence of draconian abortion laws that put politics ahead of women’s lives. These lawmakers bear responsibility for creating hesitation among health care workers, who are fearful of the legal consequences when providing necessary care. Her family deserves accountability for the delays in life-saving care that cost Amber her life. We are committed to seeking justice for Amber and fighting for a country where no other family suffers such a devastating loss due to dangerous, unnecessary legal barriers.”
