ALTADENA, Calif. (September 3, 2025) –– Nationally renowned civil rights attorney Ben Crump will hold a news conference with families devastated by the January Altadena fire to address dangerous delays and ongoing health risks.
Nearly nine months later, survivors say they have been forced to endure injustice after injustice. Families remain displaced because of a painfully slow permitting process that has allowed only a handful of rebuilding permits to move forward. At the same time, experts warn that the soil and ground where homes once stood may be contaminated with toxic lead, creating serious health risks for the community. Adding to the devastation, several residents with fragile health have died prematurely after being forced from their homes, cut off from the medical equipment and care they relied on to survive.
Crump and the impacted families will demand action to address these failures, ensure community safety, and bring justice to those who continue to be impacted.
The press conference will take place in front of the fire-ravaged remains of four homes belonging to the family of Altadena survivor Zaire Calvin. The Calvin family has been forced to endure unimaginable loss as Zaire has been denied a rebuilding permit four times in just four months.
