HARTFORD, Conn. (March 24, 2026) — Nationally renowned civil rights and personal injury attorney Ben Crump, who represents the family of Steven Jones, will join Rev. Sharpton at Jones’ funeral on Thursday. Attorney Crump will issue a national call for justice to demand accountability and meaningful reforms to law enforcement’s response to mental health crises. Rev. Al Sharpton, founder and president of the National Action Network (NAN), will deliver the eulogy.
Jones, 55, was shot nine times during an interaction with Hartford police while experiencing a mental health crisis on Feb. 27. He died nearly a week later. A preliminary report from the Office of the Inspector General classified his death as a homicide. Jones’ death has raised serious concerns about law enforcement’s handling of mental health emergencies and the use of force.
