JACKSONVILLE, FLA. (May 13, 2026) — Nationally renowned civil rights and personal injury attorney Ben Crump has been retained by the family of Morris Davis, a 48-year-old man who was shot and killed by a Clay County Sheriff’s deputy during a Department of Children and Families visit.
According to the family, deputies arrived at a local residence to assist DCF when they identified Davis as having an outstanding warrant. The family alleges that when the fatal shots were fired, Davis was already on the ground and physically unable to rise, posing no imminent threat to the officers present.
Witness video shows that Davis was several feet away from deputies at the time of the shooting. The Clay County Sheriff’s Office has stated that deputies deployed Tasers multiple times prior to the use of lethal force. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) and the State Attorney’s Office have launched an independent investigation into the incident.
Attorney Crump issued the following statement:
“Morris Davis was a human being, loved by many, and his family deserves the truth about why he died in such a brutal manner. When a man is on the ground, unable to stand, unable to advance, posing no imminent threat, and deputies still choose to use deadly force, we must ask serious questions about whether that force was justified. Video shows there was distance, time, and options. We will pursue accountability and justice for Morris and his family, and we will push for the systemic change needed to ensure that preventable losses like this stop happening.”
