What You Should Know
Legionnaires’ disease is a serious type of pneumonia caused by bacteria (Legionella) that grow in water systems. It spreads when mist containing the bacteria is inhaled. It cannot be passed person-to-person.
Symptoms may include:
- Fever, chills, and cough
- Muscle aches, fatigue, or headache
- Loss of appetite, confusion, or diarrhea
If you have symptoms and live, work, or recently visited Central Harlem, the NYC Department of Health advises seeking medical care.
