The family and legal team will respond to today’s court ruling on the Georgia abortion laws
Atlanta, GA. –– Nationally renowned civil rights and personal injury attorney Ben Crump and the family of Amber Thurman will hold a news conference on Tuesday to demand justice for the 28-year-old mother who died tragically from an infection that likely could have been prevented if not for Georgia’s restrictive abortion laws. The legal team and family will also respond to today’s ruling by a Georgia judge that declared the state’s abortion ban unconstitutional.
Amber Thurman suffered a rare complication after taking abortion medication and sought a routine dilation and curettage (D&C) procedure at Piedmont Henry Hospital. However, due to Georgia’s stringent legislation criminalizing the procedure in most cases, her doctors delayed treatment for hours, waiting for Amber’s condition to worsen to justify the procedure. Tragically, by the time they acted, it was too late to save her life.
Although Georgia’s six-week abortion ban was just struck down, Attorney Crump and the Thurman family are calling for a continued reevaluation of the state’s maternal health policies to prevent more unnecessary deaths.
This tragic case also highlights the broader issue of Black maternal health disparities in Georgia and across the country. Black women are disproportionately affected by systemic discrimination in healthcare, with one in five reporting being treated unfairly by a healthcare provider due to their race. This inequity contributes to alarming disparities in maternal mortality rates among Black women. Attorney Crump and the family will address these issues and call for urgent action to improve maternal health care for Black women in Georgia.
