HOUSTON, Tex. (May 31, 2026) — Nationally renowned civil rights and personal injury attorney Ben Crump and the family of Shahzad Gaziani will hold a news conference to demand justice following the fatal shooting of Mr. Gaziani by Houston Police Department officers on April 1, 2026. Mr. Gaziani was shot and killed at the door of his own apartment while experiencing a mental health crisis. He was a husband and the father of two young children.
According to body worn camera footage reviewed by the legal team, officers responded to a call about a man in a mental health crisis. Officers gave the command to drop a knife one to two times before opening fire. Mr. Gaziani was several yards away and had one foot across the threshold of his own door when officers discharged their weapons. Approximately nine shots were fired — four to five of them after Mr. Gaziani was already falling backward into the hallway of his home.
