ATLANTA (April 28, 2026) –– Nationally renowned civil rights and personal injury attorney Ben Crump will join Rashaad Muhammad and community leaders for a news conference tomorrow at the Fulton County Jail. The news conference will follow a meeting with the Fulton County sheriff, during which Muhammad will share his account of the alleged medical negligence and deliberate indifference he says he endured while in custody, and how it led to multiple amputations of his hands and legs.
Following the meeting, Attorney Crump will also raise questions about the County’s decision to extend and increase the contract for NaphCare following the death of LaShawn Thompson on September 13, 2022, another inmate who died a horrific death at the jail, and will demand accountability and transparency for families impacted by conditions inside the jail. In the past, Sheriff Labat has advocated for a new jail with adequate resources for the care and medical welfare of inmates housed in the jail.
