A prayer vigil luncheon will be held prior to the news conference
DECATUR, Ga. – Nationally renowned civil rights and personal injury attorney Ben Crump will join the family of Christon Collins during a Friday news conference to demand justice and accountability for his in-custody death at DeKalb County Jail.
Collins, a 27-year-old Black Army veteran with a documented mental health history, was under the county’s responsibility when he was found dead in his jail cell in March 2024. His mother obtained footage via an open records request that shows Collins lying on the floor for hours before jail staff responded, highlighting a grave failure to provide critical medical care. His family remains deeply troubled by the neglectful conditions at the jail that allowed this tragedy to unfold and is calling for systemic changes to prevent similar injustices.
The prayer vigil luncheon will be held prior to the news conference. The event will be a celebration of Collins’s life and a call to address the systemic flaws in the criminal justice system that contributed to his death.
