Springfield, Ill. — Nationally renowned civil rights and personal injury attorney Ben Crump released the following statement after new footage surfaced showing Sonya Massey, a 38-year-old Black woman, experiencing a mental health crisis on July 5, the day before she was fatally shot by former Springfield deputy Sean Grayson:
“Sonya Massey’s family is devastated by this new footage, which shows clearly that she was in the midst of a mental health crisis. Deputy Sean Grayson’s decision to use deadly force against a woman in distress remains inexcusable, unacceptable, and criminal. Grayson must continue to be held responsible for his actions that killed Sonya, who was in desperate need of help. The only acceptable outcome to this tragic case is a jury’s guilty verdict.”
