ATLANTA, Ga. — Nationally renowned civil rights and personal injury attorney Ben Crump issued the following statement on behalf of the family of Christon Collins, following today’s indictment of Tobias Woods for providing fentanyl that contributed to Collins’ tragic death while in custody at the DeKalb County Jail:
“The family of Christon Collins is relieved to see an indictment brought against Tobias Woods in Christon’s tragic death, but they remain deeply troubled by the neglectful conditions at DeKalb County Jail that allowed this tragedy to unfold. Christon, a 27-year-old Army veteran with a documented mental health history, was under the county’s responsibility and should have been monitored and protected. Instead, he was left unattended in his cell during a critical medical emergency, which we see as an alarming failure to uphold basic standards of care.
“The family is committed to ensuring that DeKalb County addresses the systemic flaws in their criminal justice system that contributed to Christon’s untimely death. The safety and dignity of all individuals in custody must be a priority.”
