SHELBY, N.C. (June 1, 2026) — Nationally renowned civil rights and personal injury attorney Ben Crump has been retained by the family of Cherrie Moore, 34, following the release of disturbing doorbell camera footage that appears to show a Shelby police officer repeatedly punching Moore while she was experiencing a mental health crisis.
According to reports, Moore was pleading for help when the encounter with law enforcement escalated. Moore reportedly suffered severe injuries, including a broken nose, black eyes, and significant physical and emotional trauma. Shelby Police Chief Brad Fraser described the officer’s actions as “disturbing and inappropriate” and confirmed that the matter was referred to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation for an independent review. The officer was terminated following the encounter.
Attorney Crump issued the following statement:
“Cherrie Moore called for help during a mental health crisis, but instead of receiving compassion and care, she was met with violence. No person in crisis should ever be subjected to this kind of treatment, especially by those sworn to protect and serve. The footage of this encounter is deeply disturbing and raises serious questions that demand answers and accountability. We intend to fight for justice for Cherrie and her family every step of the way.”
