DETROIT, Mich. (April 1, 2026) –– Nationally renowned civil rights and personal injury attorney Ben Crump and co-counsel Kevin O’Brien and Matthew Coin have been retained by the family of Andre and Carla Boynton following a fatal crash involving a Lyft driver while they were traveling to a religious event in Detroit.
According to authorities, the North Carolina couple were attending Saviours’ Day in observance of Ramadan when their Lyft driver transporting them in a Tesla allegedly drove recklessly through multiple intersections, ran traffic signals, and reached speeds of more than 90 mph in a 25 mph zone before crashing into a semi truck and a building. Andre and Carla Boynton were killed in the crash.
The driver now faces multiple criminal charges, including second-degree murder and reckless driving causing death.
Attorney Crump issued the following statement:
“This is a devastating and completely preventable tragedy. Andre and Carla Boynton should have made it safely to their destination, but instead their lives were taken because their Lyft driver, and the company by extension, failed to keep them safe.
“Rideshare companies like Lyft are not bystanders when something like this happens. We intend to conduct a full investigation into how this tragedy happened, including into the driver’s history and Lyft’s hiring and screening standards. Lyft has a responsibility for the drivers they employ and the safety of their millions of customers. This family deserves answers, and they deserve justice.”
