ATLANTA, Ga. –– Nationally renowned civil rights and personal injury attorney Ben Crump has been retained by the family of 27-year-old Christon Collins, a Black veteran who was found dead in DeKalb County Jail on March 13. Collins’ mother obtained footage via an open records request that shows her son lying on the floor for hours before jail staff responded.
Collins was incarcerated for an incident where he reportedly ran on foot across I-85 and hit his shoulder against a police cruiser. Officers charged Collins with obstruction of law enforcement and simple battery against police. Collins’ mother has stated that her son struggled with mental health since leaving the military.
Attorney Crump issued the following statement:
“Christon Collins’ family deserves answers and justice for the unimaginable loss they have endured. We are focused on uncovering more information about the suspicious circumstances in this case, and holding accountable any personnel that contributed to or neglected to prevent Christon’s death. This case underscores the mental health epidemic that leads to the death of too many veterans and Black men and women who need help.”
