MISSOURI CITY, Tex. –– Nationally renowned civil rights and personal injury attorney Ben Crump and attorney Paul Grinke have been retained by the family of Evan Lee, a 31-year-old inmate who died at the Harris County jail on March 22, 2022, after he was beaten by Harris County Jail Corrections Officers. Lee is one of 27 inmates who died in Harris County Jail last year.
During a Saturday news conference, attorneys, officials, and community activists will address the need for jail reform, as well as push for the passage of HB 3434. HB 3434 would greenlight a study conducted by the Commission on Jail Standards on the living conditions and safety of persons confined in the Harris County jail. The bill passed in the Texas House of Representatives on May 12 and is now being considered by the state senate.
