The family and legal team will hold a Tuesday news conference
FORT WALTON, Fla. — National civil rights and personal injury attorney Ben Crump will hold a news conference to announce the filing of a federal civil rights lawsuit on behalf of the family of 23-year-old U.S. Airman Roger Fortson, who was fatally shot inside his own apartment by an Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Deputy on May 3, 2024.
The lawsuit alleges that Deputy Eddie Duran used excessive and unconstitutional deadly force when he shot Fortson within seconds of the door opening, even though Fortson posed no threat. The complaint also outlines failures by the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office in training and supervision, and alleges that the Elan Apartments and its staff provided misleading, unverified information that led to the fatal police response.
