DENVER, Colo. (Sept. 1, 2026) — Nationally renowned civil rights and personal injury attorney Ben Crump and co-counsel Milo Schwab and Harry Daniels will stand with the family of Rajon Belt-Stubblefield to announce the filing of a civil lawsuit over his fatal shooting by Aurora police Officer Matthew Neely. Rajon Belt-Stubblefield, 37, was shot and killed on Aug. 30, 2025, in front of his then-18-year-old son. The family and their attorneys will also call for accountability in his death.
Details of the Incident and Criminal Indictment
Neely has since been indicted by an Arapahoe County grand jury on charges of second-degree murder and manslaughter in connection with Belt-Stubblefield’s death. According to the indictment, Neely fired three shots, striking Belt-Stubblefield in the chest and head.
Pattern of Systemic Issues within the Aurora Police Department
The lawsuit comes amid longstanding scrutiny of the Aurora Police Department, whose officers were also involved in the 2019 encounter that preceded the death of Elijah McClain. A Colorado attorney general’s investigation found that Aurora police engaged in a pattern and practice of racially biased policing and excessive force, with significant racial disparities affecting Black people.
