VALDOSTA, Ga. (February 18, 2026) – Nationally renowned civil rights attorney Ben Crump will join the family of Je’Vion Benham to hold a Thursday news conference to demand accountability for his death. On Dec. 24, 2025, Je’Vion Benham was found dead in solitary confinement at Valdosta State Prison. His body was already decomposing, and the Lowndes County coroner determined he had been deceased for at least two days before being discovered.
The coroner also determined that Mr. Benham was strangled to death, and his death has been ruled a homicide. His cellmate, who is the primary suspect, was reportedly considered violent and dangerous and affiliated with the Ghost Face Gang, a white supremacist prison gang.
The family says this death was preventable and raises serious concerns about failures by the Georgia Department of Corrections, including lack of supervision and unsafe housing decisions.
