MILWAUKEE, Wis. –– Nationally renowned civil rights and personal injury attorney Ben Crump will deliver a call for justice at the Thursday funeral for Dvontaye Mitchell, whose death mirrors that of George Floyd over four years ago. Rev. Al Sharpton, founder and president of the National Action Network (NAN), will deliver the eulogy for the 43-year-old.
Mitchell died on June 30, just after entering the Hyatt Regency in Milwaukee. Moments before his death, several of the hotel’s security guards detained Mitchell during what his mother called a mental health episode. Security guards claimed Mitchell started an altercation when they attempted to escort him out, resulting in four guards pinning him down.
Witness accounts and video footage from the scene confirm that several guards kneeled on Mitchell’s back and neck, and one struck him in the head with an object. Mitchell also begged the security guards to release him and apologized at least twice.
