ORLANDO, Fla. (Sept. 23, 2026) – Nationally renowned civil rights and personal injury attorney Ben Crump will join one of the country’s foremost forensic investigators, Andrew Garrett, and his team of digital forensic experts from Garrett Discovery at a news conference Thursday to reveal findings from the examination of Nolan Xavier Wells’ cell phone. Nolan’s family and community continue to demand truth and transparency surrounding his death.
Garrett Discovery, the digital forensics firm retained by Nolan’s family, conducted a comprehensive forensic examination of Nolan’s phone to review digital evidence that could help provide a clearer understanding of the circumstances surrounding his death. During the news conference, forensic experts will discuss their findings and the information recovered from the device.
The findings follow a Sept. 18 Jackson County, Miss., grand jury report that found “the position of, the condition of, time of discovery, and location of Mr. Wells’ body is consistent with drowning.” The same report acknowledges that both the State of Mississippi Chief Medical Examiner and independent forensic pathologist Dr. Roger A. Mitchell Jr. found the cause and manner of Nolan’s death undetermined. Dr. Mitchell’s independent autopsy documented unexplained blunt-force injuries to the back of Nolan’s head and additional areas of his back.
The Wells family and legal team continue to call for the investigation to remain open and active, the release of the state medical examiner’s full autopsy report and investigative file, and an independent federal review by the U.S. Department of Justice.
