Settlement coincides with introduction of Illinois bills to strengthen police hiring practices
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. –– Nationally renowned civil rights and personal injury attorneys Ben Crump and Antonio Romanucci, alongside the family of Sonya Massey, will hold a virtual news conference via ZOOM to announce a $10 million settlement in the lawsuit against the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Department and Sangamon County. The lawsuit stemmed from the July 2024 shooting death of Sonya Massey by former Sheriff’s Deputy Sean Grayson.
Attorneys will discuss the efforts of Illinois State Sen. Doris Turner (D-48) and Illinois State Rep. Justin Slaughter (D-27) that introduced legislation to strengthen background checks and increase transparency in law enforcement hiring. The Massey family believes these measures could have raised concerns about the officer who took her life and help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
