EVANSTON, Ill. – Nationally renowned civil rights and personal injury attorney Ben Crump, Attorneys Steven M. Levin and Margaret Battersby Black, and former Northwestern student-athlete Lloyd Yates will be holding a news conference on July 24 to announce the filing of a lawsuit against the university. Former Northwestern students were reportedly subjected to hazing, involving physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. The complaint will include named plaintiffs with horrific incident details.
The Northwestern scandal first became public on July 7 when the head football Coach Pat Fitzgerald was suspended without pay for two weeks due to an independent investigation into hazing allegations in the football program. The next day, on July 8, The Daily Northwestern published an article about the alleged hazing detailing the brutal and barbaric abuses suffered by two anonymous team members. Two days later, Fitzgerald was fired after being the head coach for 17 years.
The attorneys have uncovered a vast array of incidents of abuse in the Northwestern football program – an investigation they expect to expand to expose extreme and abusive hazing in other college athletic programs.
“This is the opportunity to eradicate hazing and abuse in college athletic programs from coast to coast,” Crump said. “That’s exactly what we intend to do, as this will undoubtedly be the MeToo movement of college athletics.”
