TSU is the First HBCU to Establish a NCAA Division I Hockey Program
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Renowned civil rights attorney Ben Crump is donating $10,000 to Tennessee State University’s (TSU) NCAA Division I men’s hockey team, a groundbreaking program that makes TSU the first Historically Black College and University (HBCU) to field a D1 hockey team. Crump’s donation is part of a larger effort to help the team reach its fundraising goal of $5 million to sustain the program for its first two seasons.
“I am honored to support Tennessee State University as they break barriers and bring diversity to the sport of hockey,” said Ben Crump. “This team represents more than just competition on the ice — it’s about expanding opportunities, challenging stereotypes, and paving the way for future generations of Black athletes in hockey. I encourage others to join me in this important cause and help TSU make history.”
TSU officially announced the creation of its hockey program in 2023, signaling a significant step toward increasing diversity and accessibility in a sport that has historically had the least representation of minorities.
In a 2019 NCAA survey, there were 1,114 men’s ice hockey players — only eight of whom were Black. At the professional level, hockey has also struggled with diversity. A 2020 analysis found that people of color comprised less than 5% of NHL players, and over the league’s 102-year history, only one of 377 head coaches has been Black.
TSU aims to play a significant role in changing that narrative. In April 2024, TSU announced the hiring of Duanté Abercrombie as the head coach of the Tigers, making him the first head coach of a hockey program at an HBCU and the first Black male coach to lead a D1 team.
“This program is bigger than hockey — it’s about opening doors and showing young athletes of all backgrounds that they belong in this sport,” said Coach Abercrombie. “Tennessee State University is making history, and we’re also shaping the future of hockey. We are incredibly grateful for Attorney Crump’s generous support, and we hope others will join us in building something truly special.”
The team continues to raise funds to cover operational costs, scholarships, and facilities as they prepare for the 2025-26 season and beyond.
