Four victims tragically passed away from contracting Legionnaires’ Disease
NEW YORK, N.Y. (September 22, 2025) – Nationally renowned civil rights and personal injury attorney Ben Crump, co-counsel from Weitz & Luxenberg, and Reverend Al Sharpton, Founder and President of the National Action Network (NAN), will hold a Tuesday morning press conference to announce the filing of two additional lawsuits and notices of claim on behalf of the families of four victims who died as a result of the Legionnaires’ outbreak.
Attorney Crump and Weitz & Luxenberg now represent 35 clients, including four families of deceased victims and four construction workers who were hospitalized after contracting Legionnaires’ disease. By Tuesday, three lawsuits will have been filed against Skanska USA, the construction company believed to be responsible for the outbreak.
The deceased victims range in age from 40 to 82 years old, all of whom had preexisting medical conditions that made them more vulnerable to severe health outcomes.
Standard safety obligations for cooling towers require visual inspection three times a week, weekly dipslide tests for bacteria, and water culture testing every 90 days. Failure to uphold these obligations, particularly amid summer heat waves and standing water, allowed Legionella bacteria to thrive, causing preventable illness and death.
