Family, attorneys to hold news conference Tuesday at 11 a.m. CT in Houston
HOUSTON (July 6, 2026) – Nationally renowned civil rights and personal injury attorney Ben Crump will join the family of Zion Branch at a news conference Tuesday, alongside co-counsel Sam Taylor of The Lanier Law Firm. Attorney Crump, Taylor, and the family will discuss their demand for answers about how a pickup truck was able to crash through the storefront of the Nothing Bundt Cakes bakery where the 19-year-old worked, killing her at the sales counter.
On June 30, the truck crashed through the entrance of the Atascocita bakery, struck a customer, and hit Zion near the counter. She died at the scene. According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the driver told deputies his foot slipped off the brake and pressed the accelerator as he attempted to park in a stall directly in front of the store.
Zion, a 2025 graduate of Sconzo Early College High School in Humble, had recently been accepted to the University of Houston-Downtown and was preparing for the next chapter of her life. She took the job at the bakery to learn the business side of baking and was saving money for school, with the dream of one day opening a bakery of her own. Her family has questions about the driver’s actions and whether protective barriers or other safety measures in the parking area could have prevented her death.
