Paperback edition features a new foreword
NEW YORK, N.Y. — Nationally renowned civil rights attorney Ben Crump announced that publisher Harper Collins has released a new paperback edition of his 2019 book “Open Season: The Legalized Genocide of Colored People” on the first day of Black History Month. The paperback edition features a new foreword by Crump to the book, which exposes the systemic injustices that lead to the legalized genocide of minorities and offers solutions for justice. The new foreword contains updates on Crump’s more recent cases – including the 2023 beating death of Tyre Nichols by Memphis police – and emphasizes the need to deal with implicit bias in America to save minorities from dying unnecessarily.
“There is no better time than during Black History Month for us to educate ourselves on the systemic forces that work to hold back people of color in America,” said Crump. “Education serves as our sharpest weapon against injustice, and learning about the past helps us create a brighter future.”
Shaped by Crump’s first-hand experience with civil litigation in state and federal courts across the country, “Open Season” reveals the systemic injustices faced by minorities and illuminates how discrimination in the courthouse devastates real families and communities. While chronicling some of his most memorable legal battles, Crump makes clear how the justice system is devised for certain people to consistently lose and others to consistently win and, using evidence and facts, exposes how it has been made legal to harm people of color.
Within “Open Season,” Crump offers a cogent analysis of legal tenets including the 13th Amendment, the 1951 Genocide Petition to the United Nations, and controversial Stand Your Ground laws. He explores how race detrimentally influences sentencing and reveals how police unions protect officers who shoot unarmed civilians – particularly civilians of color.
“Open Season” can be purchased directly through Harper Collins and from other booksellers nationwide.
