MEMPHIS, Tenn. –– The Memphis community will come together with nationally renowned civil rights and personal injury attorney Ben Crump and the family of Tyre Nichols on January 7, 2025, to commemorate the life of Nichols on the second anniversary of his tragic death by officers of the Memphis Police Department. The event will begin with a march starting at 4:00 PM, culminating in a candlelight vigil at the site where Nichols was beaten by five Memphis police officers.
The event will reflect on the profound loss experienced by Nichols’ family and the Memphis community while envisioning a path toward justice, accountability, and rebuilding trust between law enforcement and the citizens they serve as we grapple with the findings of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Pattern or Practice investigation. That starts with the City of Memphis leadership demanding the ordinances passed after Tyre’s death be enforced. Now that the Department of Justice has completed their investigation and issued a report stating pre-textual stops are being used unconstitutionally, the practice needs to be stopped.
“The past two years have been a journey of pain, resilience, and advocacy,” said RowVaughn Wells, “This event is not only about remembering my son Tyre’s life but also about creating space for conversations on reform and healing that our community urgently needs.”
The march will begin at Ross and Raines and proceed to 6727 Castlegate Lane. Participants are encouraged to bring candles to light the way forward and honor Nichols’ legacy.
The vigil will include remarks from local leaders, clergy, and community members, as well as a moment of silence to remember Tyre and all victims of police violence.
The tragic death of Tyre Nichols sparked a nationwide conversation about police accountability and systemic reform. This year’s anniversary event seeks to continue turning grief into action by advocating for the policies we passed last to be followed so that the community can start to rebuild trust with police.
