RICHMOND, Va. –– Nationally renowned civil rights and personal injury attorney Ben Crump released the following statement on behalf of Caroline Ouko, mother to Irvo Otieno, on the one-year anniversary of his death at the hands of seven Henrico County Sheriff’s deputies:
“Today marks one year since I lost my beloved son, Irvo Otieno. My heart grieves for his loss. I have tried to understand how and why such a magnificent person was taken from all of us. It is a conversation that I have every day with God. I have tried every day since his death to muster as much energy as is within me to ensure that nothing like this happens again to any other mother and family.
“I thank all who have regularly supported me and my other son, Leon Ochieng. Our support network includes our close friends, Irvo’s high school friends, our family, and community members who have stepped forward to support us and to ensure Irvo’s legacy. They have regularly accompanied Leon and I to Irvo’s gravesite as we mourn and remember him, to the Dinwiddie Courthouse as we seek justice for his death, and to the General Assembly as we all work to enact Irvo Otieno’s Law. Thank you to all who have helped me and Leon to keep Irvo’s spirit alive. My son continues to impact this community. He continues to call out for fairness to all of those who suffer from mental illness. Please continue to listen for his voice. It continues to be there. It will always be there.”
