Crump will hold a Tuesday news conference with TSU leadership and students
NASHVILLE, Tenn. –– Nationally renowned civil rights and personal injury attorney Ben Crump will meet with students at Tennessee State University to discuss the appalling finding that Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) were underfunded by states to the tune of more than $12 billion.
It is estimated that the total nationwide underfunding at HBCUs amounts to over $13 billion, with Tennessee State University ranked as the most underfunded with $2,147,784 less funding than it should have received. Under federal law, states must equitably distribute funding among all its land grant universities. However an analysis by the Biden administration, based on data from the National Center for Education Statistics, found that states chronically underfunded HBCUs.
Attorney Crump released the following statement:
“HBCUs were created to give Black students a chance to achieve a college education, and they still play a vital role in helping Black young people succeed and close equity gaps. So, it is truly appalling to discover that states have been grossly underfunding HBCUs for decades in violation of federal law. The funding gap between what the law required and what these colleges received is astronomical – and cannot be ignored.
“Correcting this egregious funding discrepancy can ensure that our HBCUs thrive and that the students they educate reach their full potential is an urgent priority. If the states refuse to provide the owed funds, students and alumni will have to do what is best for their universities and pursue legal action for this unjustifiable inequity.”
