Howard County School Abuse Incidents Shock the Community
A Howard County teacher, 44-year-old Matthew Barth, is facing charges for the alleged sexual abuse of a 15-year-old student at Maryland’s Mt. Hebron High School.
Detectives believe that the teacher abused the student on multiple occasions inside the school for four months after reviewing electronic records, which showed that there was inappropriate contact between the teacher and the victim.
Also, a jury convicted a former Maryland School for the Deaf aide of sexually abusing two of seven middle-school girls who said he had touched their breasts or buttocks over a three-year period at the school’s Columbia campus.
The Howard County jury cleared 38-year-old Clarence Taylor III of one count of child sexual abuse but was unable to reach a verdict on four other counts.
Schools must have adequate training, policies, and procedures in place to ensure the safety and security of their students.
Schools must also work with their communities to create a safer culture in which abuse is not tolerated.
It’s tragic that the children of Howard County schools have been subjected to such appalling behavior, and it’s imperative that steps are taken to ensure that it never happens again.
